The bar chart illustrates the result of a survey on various leisure activities the elderly in a certain community mainly take part in on a daily basis. The overwhelming majority of respondents prefer watching TV(90.8%) and going for a walk(68.3%). Growing flowers, reading books and playing chess are less popular among them,at 34.7%,31.8% and 18.4% respectively.
This phenomenon can be attributed to the following reasons. For one thing,TV viewing, serving as a way to relax ,does not require much physical strength . This makes it more suitable for elderly people than activities that are either physically demanding , such as gardening and chess playing. For another, taking a stroll is beneficial to the health of senior citizens and can also provide opportunities for them to socialize with their peers. By comparison, doing gardening and reading are often perceived as solitary activities, which may exacerbate their feelings of loneliness .
Looking ahead, the situation reflected by the graph is estimated to continue. It is highly suggested that the local government plan a rich variety of community events to enliven the elderly's twilight years.
