Essay 1: The government should allocate more funding to teaching sciences rather than other subjects in order for a country to develop and progress. To what extent do you agree?
Some people contend that national authorities should prioritize more funding for STEM subjects over other academic courses in order to accelerate a nation’s development. Personally, I partly agree with it.
On the one hand, technological industries can optimize workforce efficiency through automation if more students can master the science field. For instance, a large number of companies generate contracts and reports with the help of AI, which could save labor costs and work effectively. As a greater number of graduates excel in the technology sector, advanced technical machines or platforms are likely to be produced, thereby liberating the workforce from doing tedious and complex tasks. Another merit of government investment in science teaching is that it can enhance overall well-being eventually, a benefit particularly evident in the realm of public health. In countries where biology and psychology courses are emphasized in the curriculum, healthcare professionals are excellent at diagnosing and treating long-term diseases. Furthermore, exceptional medical services and systems result in greater health satisfaction.
However, the disadvantages of the government investing more funds in science teaching is that overfocusing on STEM education may result in making students feel aversion towards science, or even harmful to their creativity. In a classroom where perhaps some students dislike physics, chemistry and biology because of its abstract nature. They seldom see a connection between abstract equations and real-world scenarios, especially in mathematics class. Furthermore, when they lack the understanding of the principal, their reasoning skills become stunted, many students end up shunning further exploration of science. Meanwhile, not every student enjoys learning science but other subjects like Art or P.E, imparting professional science knowledge that they are not interested in can create a feeling of disappointment. This approach erodes student creativity, which is an essential skill that helps accelerate the development speed of a nation.
In conclusion, speeding up a country’s development by providing more science lessons can help optimize human resources and raise living standards. However, it limits a learner’s creativity and develops a negative attitude toward science learning.
