Due to the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets in some countries, many small, local businesses are unable to compete. Some people think that the closure of local business will bring about the death of local communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is increasingly evident that a growing contingent of supermarkets is developing rapidly, making neighborhood stores vulnerable. Shouting down community-based businesses brings adverse consequences to local communities. Personally, I partly agree with this view.
On the one hand, a higher unemployment rate can gradually affect people’s living standards as less working positions are available in a community. The existence of community-based shops is to create more job opportunities for people to earn money. But in a situation where store employees face challenges to pay for medical bills, housing costs, and supporting families when neighbour-based groceries are close. Their financial security is under threat, thus people within the same community have worse living qualities including physical or mental well-being. In addition, local residents will spend more on purchasing daily necessities if small businesses are no longer exist. Since large companies require higher operating costs and revenue tax, many items and products are more expensive than small stores. Those who are struggling financially, closing neighbour-based businesses make them feel anxious or disappointed because it is difficult for them to afford items in the supermarkets
On the other hand, accelerating supermarket growth brings more benefits than keeping local small companies. The government pays more attention on regulating or managing large enterprises, ensuring the quality of products are up-to-date. In situations where many small businesses or local stores are driven purely by profit and prioritize prospective earning. They totally ignore the fact that substandard products will bring health concerns to citizens including the risk of getting serious illness. In this case, citizens feel less secure of living around and affect their well-being.
In conclusion, although large enterprises promote greater quality items than small community-based stores, higher unemployment rate and increasing economic pressure for residents should be taken into account. The ideal solution is to keep the local shops but support the development of supermarket at the same time.
