Some people think that all the lawbreakers should be taken into the prison, while others believe that there are better alternatives, (for example, doing some work or learning some skills in the community). Discuss both views and give your opinion.
A substantial contingent of individuals believe that lawbreakers should be sent to jail for correction, while some people consider that prioritizing other correctional method such as working for community can be more effective. Personally, I agree with latter view of point. On the one hand, a light sentence is unlikely to foster a genuine awareness of their actions when individuals engage in criminal activities, regardless of the extent of crime. From the psychological point of view, alternatives methods always offer a wrong message to prisoners that their detrimental conducts are forgivable and repeatable, making them fail to realize that how their abhorrent behaviors negatively affects individuals. For people who commit serious crimes, imposing sentences is an effective way of educating violators. If this policy cannot be applied in society, individuals tend to break the law again and pose a threat to other members, which generates irreversible consequences. However, I support the view that alternatives measure should be taken into consideration. Through doing unpaid jobs instead of going to jail, this substitution is capable of greater fostering a sense of community responsibility. According to the Chinese National News, the percentages of adolescents who commit crime reach 31.84% internationally in 2025, so that lighter punishment should be applied to the young generation. Since teenagers are in formative stage and still improving their understanding of the world, volunteering by cleaning streets help them to develop a sense of pride as a meaningful member of community. Furthermore, it reduces government’s financial and administrative burden of supervising offenders in detention facilities. As national authorities utilize less funds on prisoners regulation, the savings generated offer an opportunity to invest in local development. In conclusion, while being sentenced in prison improves people’s grasp of their unethical actions, fostering a genuine understanding of community social commitment and lightening government’s expenditure by contributing to local areas make an essential impact on the society.
