A considerable number of people believe that every person who commits crimes should be sent to jail for corrections, while other consider that prioritizing other correction methods including working for communities can be more effective. Personally, I will explore both viewpoints before presenting my own stance.
On the one hand, for all felonies, a light sentence is unlikely for them to foster a genuine awareness of their behaviors, but allowing them to repeat the same mistakes again. Alternatives methods always convey a wrong message to perpetrators that their harmful actions are forgivable and repeatable, making them fail to realize that how their abhorrent behaviors negatively affects individuals and even the society. For example, statistics indicate that the percentage of reoffence of violators who commit murdering, arson, drug and human trafficking and other grave crimes but do not receive harsh penalty reaches approximately 70%.
On the other hand, others believe that alternative measures should be taken into consideration. Through doing work in community instead of going to jail, this substitution is more effective to lawbreakers’ rehabilitation. Criminals prevent from having negative records in their documents if they only help out the local areas rather than going to jail. Otherwise, their person credits are likely to be affected, creating difficulties when they seek a job and attend schools. Furthermore, another benefit of having a backup plan for all felons is that governments can lighten their financial pressure and administrative burden of supervising offenders. To be more specific, the national authorities spend less founds on prisoners regulation including providing daily necessity and hiring staffs.
In conclusion, while being punished in prison greatly improves all lawbreaker’s understanding of their own actions, lighten sentences for all people who go beyond the laws can minimize the effect for their future and save government’s expenditure. In my view, I believe that every offenders should be punished but depending on the extend of crime they commit.
