Though a brief sigh of disappointment swept through the room, it was quickly replaced by understanding nods. Then, Mom served the delicious dishes, and everyone began the big dinner. Guided by Alex's humorous jokes, the dining room echoed with laughter. Around the table, they happily share the highlights of their years: Aunt proudly said her son's admission to university, while Grandpa celebrated his fruitful harvest. The dinner went warmly, though a seat left empty for Dad.

His uniform was covered in snow, and his face was red from the freezing wind. So surprised and thrilled were we that everyone stood up instantly. Alex rushed to him, helping him take off his coat, while Mom quickly handed him a bowl of hot soup. Dad apologized for being late. "It doesn't matter. We are all proud of you!" Grandpa said with a loving smile. Having eaten some food, Dad joined the circle under the red lantern. Looking at the clock ticking towards midnight, the whole family began to count down, "Ten, nine, eight..." Followed by the fireworks outside, cheers for the New Year lit up the house, making a meaningful reunion.
