Nearly one in three people in the UK have had their mobile phone stolen. A study by Nuke From Orbit, a fintech start-up, has revealed that 29 per cent of UK adults have been victims of phone theft, up from 17 per cent in 2023.

The results have sparked anxiety over digital security and caused a drop in trust in the police.

"The current solutions — and the police response — simply do not match the scale of the problem," James O'Sullivan, the start-up's chief executive, told the Financial Times. "Thefts are rising, personal security is lacking and users are stuck in risky habits."

Nearly 50 per cent of people reported that they were most concerned about unauthorised access to their bank accounts and digital phone wallets.

O'Sullivan launched his start-up after his own phone was stolen and the company is now working on software to improve phone security, with plans to launch a product later this year.

The new product will feature a "kill switch" that will give users a chance to remotely disable all linked apps on their mobile phone and freeze their accounts from another device.

Nearly 35 per cent of those surveyed said that they use the same or similar Pins for multiple apps on their phone. Thieves have been taking advantage of the lack of digital protection on mobile phones, with record numbers being stolen each year.

Young people are the most vulnerable to opportunistic phone snatchers, with 71 per cent using their mobile in public multiple times a day, according to Nuke From Orbit.

Only 24 per cent of those who had phones stolen reported thefts to the police immediately, instead choosing to contact their banks and mobile carriers.

O'Sullivan said: "The only reason people go to the police is if it's required for getting their money back from the bank. Being proactive, where you're reducing the window to potential fraud is much better than trying to get back the ultimately quite replaceable device."

However, 61 per cent who had not been victims said that their first task would be to contact the police.
